What’s more effective for muscle pain treatment: massage or Skelaxin?

February 28th, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

We have to start with a slight problem of definition. The practice of massage varies significantly between different cultures. In some countries, it is not considered a part of medicine but serves a more social purpose, designed to improve mood and help people relax. In other countries, massage is fully integrated into the healthcare service as one of the many possible processes of physical therapy. In the US, massage would be considered a complementary or alternative medical treatment, i.e. it serves as a back-up to conventional medicine. Thus, when combined with other treatments, massage therapy helps to improve the mobility of joints, reduce swelling, ease muscle spasms and reduce pain. In accepting massage, the US medical profession is recognizing patients can get the best of both worlds: the healing powers of Western science and the more spiritual and relaxing powers of Eastern wellness. Massage is therefore increasingly made available to treat both physical conditions causing neck and back pain, nerve pain, etc., and also mental disorders such as anxiety, stress-related insomnia, etc.

In accepting massage in its hospitals, the US healthcare service is opening itself to the increasing body of scientific evidence showing massage as an effective treatment. Until a few years ago, the medical profession resisted holding clinical trials to test “alternative” remedies. Such studies as existed in other countries were treated with some contempt. Massage was nothing more that an indulgence in high-priced spas. Now the manipulation of the soft tissues by a skilled therapist is acknowledged to reduce physical pain, relieve stress and bring down blood pressure. The methods differ depending on the purpose of the treatment. In general, the therapist will press, manipulate and rub the relevant parts of the body. Most techniques rely on the use of the hands and fingers, but others use the forearm, elbow and, in a few cases, the feet. The pressure may be light and involve gentle stroking. Or it can involve the use of significant pressure to knead and reach down to deep layers of muscle.

If you are experiencing muscle spasms, i.e. an involuntary contraction like cramp that persists, the combination of massage therapy and the use of a muscle relaxant like skelaxin has been found particularly effective. This most commonly occurs in the back, buttocks and legs. It may be from a physical cause such as a herniated disk or sciatica with pain radiating from the nerve. The manipulation of the disk can rapidly reduce pain and improve mobility. As the more acute symptoms are relieved, the drug will ease the problems in the muscles and reduce the risk of further spasms. In the case of sciatica, more aggressive treatment may be required in the use of steroids or, if the pain does not subside, surgery. But, in all this, the therapist will be able to guide you through the process of relieving the acute symptoms and planning a rehabilitation regime to reduce the risk of the problems recurring. At this time, it is most useful if your doctor and the therapist work as a team. That gives you the best advice on the use of prescription painkillers and drugs like skelaxin, while receiving comprehensive physical therapy. It delays treatment and can lead to misunderstandings if you constantly have to move between different hospital or clinic departments.

Cheap Health Insurance Made Easy

mental health insurance

Cheap health insurance has become the issue of the moment in South Carolina and across the country. More small businesses are increasingly unable to provide cheap health insurance plans to their employees because of the rising cost and the lack of federal and state legislation that would allow small businesses to purchase cheap medical insurance in pools. In the meantime South Carolina and other states are looking to cut the costs of the Medicare and Medicaid health insurance programs for the elderly and the poor. However, more affordable forms of health insurance plans are available as some private companies are experimenting with a new variation of cheap health insurance known as health discount plans. In the article that follows we’ll explain the various aspects of cheap health insurance in South Carolina and how to find a plan that works for you.

Health Care Costs due to Managed Health Care

The current health care system in America is inaccessible to approximately 47 million poor and lower middle class people. In order to address the growing health care insurance crisis in the U.S. that resulted in health care cost growth in the 1970s and 1980s, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) sprung up. These were initially as non-profit groups designed to separate unnecessary tests and treatments from those that the patient required in an effort to keep costs down. Managed care organizations began screening requested procedures by physicians to pre-authorize what the HMO would or would not cover. However, the number of people who are the riskiest to insure-diabetics, cancer, etc.-continues to rise. Many South Carolina managed care industry experts say the cost of cheap health insurance is still high because of the existing pool of insured people who use the health care system more than an average amount.

The other battle that is ongoing in South Carolina involves the health insurance companies and hospitals, the latter which cannot turn anyone away from care by law. However, as the number of South Carolinians who cannot afford cheap health insurance increases, hospital emergency rooms are handling the majority of the load. More people have to turn to hospitals as their primary health care givers given a lack of adequate or non-existant health insurance coverage.

Cheap Health Insurance Plans Through the Workplace

Most cheap medical insurance policies in South Carolina are usually written through group coverage offered at work by your employer through a private South Carolina cheap health insurance company. This is usually the more cost effective way to purchase cheap health insurance now available since a large number of employees allows South Carolina companies to reduce their insurance premiums. Similar to buying in bulk, the more health insurance plans a business can purchase for its employees the less expensive the insurance is per employee. In South Carolina, like the rest of the nation, the number of companies that can provide cheap health insurance for their employees is declining.

Personal Health Insurance Plans

Health insurance plans can be purchased by individuals and families from virtually every insurance provider in South Carolina. Trying to purchase health insurance on an individual basis can be more expensive if the person already has a health problem, known as a pre-existing condition. Many companies will not cover people with pre-existing conditions if they have no continuation of coverage-renewing health insurance coverage after only a prescribed short period of time-picked up from an earlier cheap health insurance policy.

South Carolina Health Insurance Pool

The South Carolina Health Insurance Pool is a state health insurance plan designed to provide coverage for those that either do not have or have lost medical coverage at no fault of their own and are uninsurable. The pool was created by the General Assembly to help people who couldn’t get health insurance coverage from any other source, including people with certain disabilities. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina currently administers the pool.

Coverage is available to a person who has been a state resident for at least 30 days and meets the following criteria:

They were turned down for private health insurance coverage for health reasons;

They were accepted for private health insurance, but have pre-existing illnesses or conditions excluded from coverage, for a period exceeding 12 months;

They are paying health insurance premiums for comparable coverage which are more than 150 percent of the premium levels charged by the pool;

In certain situations, other individuals whose last health insurance coverage was an employer based group health plan may be eligible for coverage.

No matter what your age, there are also several federally sponsored programs to help you if can’t afford the premiums for individual health insurance, providing you meet their eligibility guidelines.

Medicare, a health insurance program for people age 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease.

Medicaid, a program for the poorest individuals and low-income families with children.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a plan that provides health care to children whose parents make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but earn too little to afford individual health insurance.

Types of Cheap Health Insurance Coverage

Cheap health insurance plans generally fall into one of two categories: indemnity plans and managed care plans (HMOs, PPOs or POS plans). An indemnity plan allows you to choose your own doctors and pays for your medical expenses totally, in part, or up to a specified amount. Managed care plans generally provide broader coverage within a specified network of health-care providers.

Although you can purchase cheap health insurance plans that cover specific areas of health care (surgical, hospital, physician expense plans) most plans cover varying degrees of health care in a number of different areas. This health insurance coverage, known as major medical insurance, offers extremely broad coverage with a very high maximum benefit that’s designed to protect you against losses from catastrophic illness or injury.

When comparing cheap medical insurance plans, check to see if they provide additional benefits that you may need, including prescription drugs, preventive care, mental health benefits, maternity care, and vision care. A comparison of various health insurance policies and rates through many South Carolina health insurance companies can be obtained at www.insurances.sc.

Cheap Health Insurance Recipient Costs

With most cheap health insurance policies available in South Carolina, the way to control cost is to cut down on the out-of-pocket expenses. Since most health care insurance policies require you to make a co-payment (the amount you pay a health care provider with every visit), anything involving a lot of time spent in the doctor or dentist’s office can become expensive. Most also require a deductible (costs you must cover out of your pocket for any major expense before your cheap health insurance policy picks up the remaining costs). You may also have coinsurance, the percentage of cheap medical insurance cost you will still have to pay after you reach your deductibles.

Another thing to consider is COBRA health insurance. This law allows employees who leave a job the ability to stay on that South Carolina company’s employee health insurance for up to 18 months although they have to pay the full amount of the coverage. Check the COBRA benefits to see if purchasing a less expensive individual health insurance plan may be in your best interest.

How to Buy Cheap Health Insurance

If you need to purchase individual health insurance, it can be expensive. Unlike group plans, in which the costs and risks associated with health care are spread among many people; individual health policies are “medically underwritten” to take into account your personal health history. Any “pre-existing” condition such as heart disease, diabetes, and even pregnancy, can nix your chances of acceptance or boost your premiums.

To determine the acceptability of a particular applicant, a health insurance underwriter can require information regarding the following:

The individual’s age: Age determines rates and whether coverage will be issued at all.

The individual’s gender: at younger ages, males have a lower rate of illness and injury than females. That changes by age sixty.

The individual’s health history and physical condition: Someone who has had a previous condition that can contribute to a future illness/injury is not considered an ideal risk. In response to a less than ideal medical history, modified coverage may be offered depending on the individual’s health, higher than normal premiums may be issued, or the person may be denied coverage altogether.

The individual’s occupation and hobbies: Some occupations such as construction workers have higher insurance rates, along with people who enjoy dangerous activities such as skydiving or bungee jumping. At times certain occupations are considered so hazardous that insurance companies will not cover them at all.

Your first step in getting cheap health insurance coverage is to understand exactly what you need. Think carefully about what coverage you must have. Do you need health insurance for your whole family, or just yourself? Do you want to choose your providers? If you’re over 65, do you need insurance to fill the gaps in Medicare? Do you need – and can you afford – long-term disability and/or long term care coverage? Even if you begin by soliciting cheap health insurance quotes you must still know exactly what you want in terms of health insurance coverage so you will be comparing apples to apples when weighing any cheap health insurance premium quote.

After that, contact a South Carolina insurance agent in your area. Ideally, you can start with an independent South Carolina insurance agent who is familiar with the insurance companies that do business in your area. This agent is also not bound to write coverage for any particular health insurance company so he or she can give you an honest appraisal of various health insurance policies.

When you’ve found the right coverage, you’ll give information to your agent to complete the necessary forms. Be honest. It’s important to disclose your medical history thoroughly and accurately. Report all of your health problems to your agent. If any of your health information is misstated or incomplete, the company might refuse to pay your claims and could cancel your policy.

The use of painkillers in the US has reached its peak

February 26th, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

A recent analysis of the data provided by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has shown that the US citizens today are taking more painkillers like tramadol than ever before throughout the history. The study comprised a ten year period, and since 1997 the was a 90 per cent increase in painkiller medication consumption as reported by hospitals, pharmacies, and individual doctors.

The figures show that in the last year of the study the US population has consumed over 200,000 pounds of such painkillers as codeine, hydrocodone, meperidine, morphine, and oxycodone. If put in per capita perspective that means that every American consumed about 300 milligrams of analgesics.

One of the most used painkillers from that number were those containing oxycodone, which is the active element in the painkiller OxyContin. There was an astronomical increase of 600 per cent in sales in only 8 years of the study. Previously oxycodone was called “hillbilly heroin” because it was primarily traded over the counter in the Appalachia region and used for recreational purposes. However, today it is widely sold in big metropolitan areas from East to West.

Specialists suggest that there is a set of reasons behind such a skyrocketing use of analgesics among US citizens:

  • The nation becomes older in age group proportions.
  • Drugs have become much wider and more aggressively marketed with almost a triple increase in advertising spendings during the last ten years.
  • Painkillers have become the cornerstone of the way the pain is treated and managed nowadays.

The last reason draws up more concerns from the part of professionals. It seems like it’s easier for an individual to take Tramadol pill for example and forget about the pain, rather than address a doctor to see whether there’s a health issue to be concerned with. Not speaking of exercises and improvements in lifestyle. Painkiller pills have become the fast solution for any trouble, but can they stand up with the array of public health issues that may arise in the future due to such tendencies. We’ll see.

What’s the value of research?

February 26th, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

In some cultures, the best guess was that the world was flat and that the sun was a kind of torch or fire put there by gods to light the sky and keep us warm. Today, even though scientists have not always had the best of reputations, we have at least managed to prove the world to be roundish and that the Earth orbits the sun. Although this kind of science is interesting in an abstract kind of way, it does not touch individual lives in the same way as, say, medical research. Here concerned scientists may work to understand different diseases or disorders so that more effective treatments can be devised. The work of one team may save the lives of millions over the next decades. It is therefore faintly curious that, for the most part, astronomy is funded by the state and the development of medications is funded by private companies for profit. Common sense should have this the other way round. There is no immediate social benefit from knowing more about the cosmos so what justification is there for spending public money on this research? Equally, there is every benefit for the community at large if more safer and effective treatments are made available. Lives will be saved. The quality of life for those who are injured can be improved. This would seem to be worthy of support out of public funds.

But the current system is to leave it to private interests to decide what to research. If there are only a few people who have this problem or the many are too poor to pay a high retail price, there is no profit to be earned. So no research and development to help them. As a result, millions die from diseases that could be treated. Even when a “good” social purpose is served, the basic research is only done to get the drug or device approved. Once the FDA has given its nod, the spotlight passes on to the next drug in the pipeline. Little is done to follow up on how the drug actually performs once it is let loose into the world. The reason, of course, is that this research could be inconvenient and damage the profitability of the drug. Suppose the research found the drug was killing patients. It would have to be withdrawn and profits would dry up.

It is therefore interesting to see that viagra is probably the most continuously researched drug on the planet. For example, in 2002, there was a piece of meta-research done on 27 sets of clinical trials. This is research which picks the best conducted individual trials and puts all the results together to see if there are any general trends. There have been more than one hundred more trials since then. The conclusion is that viagra is not only safe but also effective in men who suffer erectile dysfunction because of depression, diabetes, heart disease, prostate cancer and spinal cord injuries. It is a shame the same level of interest is not shown in proving other drugs such as Vioxx to be as safe.

10 Important Questions Which You Should Ask if Your are Purchasing Health Insurance

mental health insurance

If you are considering buying a health insurance plan the details of your plan are critical and there a variety of questions which you have to ask. Simply looking at the premium that you are being asked to pay is not enough and you need to look at various different things including any limitations, exclusions, restrictions on where treatment can be undertaken, additional payments and fee requirements and several other things.

Below are a few very important questions that you must always ask whenever you are buying a health insurance plan:

1. What deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses am I going to have to pay? The premiums are merely the beginning and most plans will require you to cover the cost of your bills up to a specified figure before your insurance kicks in. After that, you will usually also have to make a contribution towards the cost of each medical bill.

2. Are health screenings and medical exams included in the plan? Look carefully to find out whether your plan includes cover for routine medical exams including things like breast exams, mammograms and pap smears for women.

3. How are specialist care treatments and referrals dealt with? Look at the procedures you have to follow if you have to be referred for specialist treatment and whether there are any special provisions for meeting the cost of specialist treatment.

4. What cover is given for hospitalization or emergency care? {Take a good look to see if you will have to have pre-approval for hospital or emergency treatment. It might seem ridiculous but some policies will not let you seek emergency treatment without the pre-approval of a designated physician.

5. Is cover given for prescription medicines? Many plans will limit the drugs which can be prescribed frequently stating that listed generic drugs rather than brand name drugs have to be prescribed. You also need to look very carefully at the proportion of any cost you will have to meet for medicines.

6. Is cover for vision and dental care provided? A lot of plans do not cover dental and vision care at all while some limit treatment to only routine annual dental and eye checkups.

7. Is psychiatry, psychotherapy and other mental health care cover provided? Not all insurance plans will provide cover for mental health care and where cover is given you need to look very carefully at just what cover is being offered.

8. Is hospital, nursing home and home care covered? It is very important to examine the extent to which cover is given for care in hospital, in a nursing home or at home and whether there is a ceiling on your cover.

9. Is physical therapy and rehabilitation covered? Accident or illness frequently results in a need for physical therapy or rehabilitation and so it is important to look at the extent to which these are covered.

10. Is alternative treatment covered? As an increasing number of us are turning to alternative treatments such as the use of holistic treatments or acupuncture you should check to see if these are covered if this is an area which you wish to make use of.

The premium you will be paying for your health insurance plan is of course very important but you have to bear in mind that it is only one small element of the total package you are buying.

When you buy cialis, is this like buying an aphrodisiac?

February 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

It’s almost impossible to separate sex from psychology. When all is working well, self-esteem and confidence are at high levels. When things are not working so well, this undermines confidence and many feel depressed. If the problems persist, the depression can become severe. There are a range of fancy words that are paraded out at this point: impotence, erectile dysfunction, libido, and so on. The precise details of the physical difficulties also vary. A man may find it difficult or impossible to get an erection, or a hard erection may disappear suddenly during sexual activity, or there may be premature ejaculation, and so on. It’s convenient to group all the different forms of failure under one label. But this depersonalizes the problem. Instead of seeing it as “your” problem, doctors start talking about general trends and how the majority can be treated. When you want someone to pay attention to your situation, you find people talking about you as if you are not in the room or talking in generalities. So let’s avoid all this slightly embarrassed discussion and get down to basics.

In some cultures, men who have sexual difficulties rely on traditional remedies. These substances are called aphrodisiacs – the word coming from Aphrodite who, in ancient Greece, was the Goddess of Love – and they are believed to improve sexual desire and performance. Examples range from herbs, the powdered horns of large animals to preparations made from beetles and insects. In the majority of cases, these have no physical effect on the body but, because they are recommended by respected authority figures in the local society, the affected men usually find them effective. This goes to prove the general rule that, if the mind is willing, the body responds. The medical profession calls this the “placebo effect”.

There are three prescription only medications on the market to treat erectile dysfunction. Chemically, they all rely on the same basic active ingredients and work in the same way. Recently, the American College of Physicians asked the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to find out whether there was any evidence to show that one was more effective than the other two. There have only been four clinical trials making a direct comparison between the three and 122 trials studying the drugs individually. The conclusion was that the three drugs are broadly similar in their levels of effectiveness and safety. But the majority of men preferred one of the drugs because, in one form, it produces thirty-six hours of sexual potency. In the once-daily form, men taking the drug have levels of response broadly the same as “normal” men who have not been affected by erectile dysfunction. Thus, in terms of convenience and effect, an increasing majority of men prefer to buy cialis. However, this system of recommendation and sale by word-of-mouth, is exactly the same as the process for selling oysters as an aphrodisiac. Merely suggesting that oysters give you great sex sells them. It’s the same with drugs. If men are recommended one drug and they have a good experience with it, they may never try the others. Trusting the product to give a known result creates buying habits. In this instance, unlike oysters, cialis has a very precise physical effect which gives sexual responsiveness. Comparing it to an aphrodisiac for marketing purposes is fair. Otherwise, you can trust cialis to work, no matter what others may tell you.

How to manage your phobia

February 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

About 19 million US citizens have been diagnosed with various phobias that really aggravate their wellbeing. The most widely spread types of phobias are social and specific phobia. Those who suffer from social phobia have a very hard time while being in various social situations, constantly expecting embarrassment, discomfort or even fear. Specific phobias make the patient extremely fearful when it comes to dealing with a specific object or situation, like flying or dealing with animals. Phobias force people to avoid many activities that in other way would be very pleasant and entertaining, for example flying or climbing, imposing many restrictions on their lifestyles.

Phobias can be characterized as a state of irrational fear that is caused by a faulty thought pattern that also leads to physical discomfort. This is the point where the brain triggers the “flight or fight” mechanism, which is a rudimentary self-preservation pattern, controlling the production of adrenalin and helping the individual deal with potentially life-threatening situations. What happens in case of a phobia is that this mechanism is triggered when there’s no real danger. And the best way to avoid such “danger” is to scare the individual into a safe place or situation. The problem here is that phobias can be developed from contacting with people, animals, objects or situations that other people would regard as totally safe and even pleasing.

But you have to bear in mind that it’s not insanity in any way. You may feel like you’re going out of your mind because of the overwhelming sensations and fear that simply jam your sense of consciousness. But the good news is that phobias can be effectively treated.

Phobias are cured by changing the thought mechanisms that trigger adrenalin output and fear by gradually exposing the patient to the object of their fear. This way the patient becomes more accustomed to the object or situation, which in other case would be avoided, and learns how to cope with it. This also reduces the individual’s sensitivity to adrenalin, as it doesn’t provide the same anxious effect over a prolonged period of time.

The best way to reduce adrenalin is exercising on a daily basis. In this way you will be able to both burn the excess levels of the substance and reduce your sensitivity to it. Doctors also recommend reducing the intake of any substances that are similar to adrenalin such as nicotine, caffeine, marijuana and alcohol. Some people regard marijuana and alcohol as good ways to reduce anxiety and it really works in the short-run. But in the long run the overall anxiety will only get aggravated, sometimes joined by substance abuse. Special types of breathing such as diaphragmatic breathing also help cope with anxiety associated with phobias.

If you experience severe anxiety there are many medications that can help you cope with this conditions. Buying drugs like Xanax won’t actually cure you from phobia but it will make it a lot easier to handle fearful situations and make the treatment a lot more effective.

Overcoming phobia is of course a matter of self-confidence and effort that you have to make over yourself and be confident that you can overcome the condition. Imagine what you would say to your friend suffering from phobia to make him or her feel safer, and say it to yourself. Of course, drugs like Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications will help you, but it’s only you who can make them really effective. Bear that in mind!

Is the affordable sex medication risky?

February 22nd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

In case you didn’t know, erectile dysfunction is one of the most talked about problems of the century. It doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with people nowadays. It means we are open to discuss the matter that bothers us and men around us willing to find a way to live a good sexual life.

Therapy of Erectile Dysfunction is set to bring the blood flow into penis and make it produce a strong erection. But what everyone must know here that Cialis or Viagra as well as other sex medications can destroy you if taken inappropriately. Journalists from Florida have recently came up with shocking statistics showing that the tragic circumstances can occur if those pills are consumed by people with heart problems. University of Florida could not stay indifferent and decided to respond to this statement by telling there is no technical proof that those of us who might have cardiovascular malady meet a higher risk of death while consuming the sex pill.

More than 150 million men all around the world meet the Erectile Dysfunction issues in their day-to-day life. Cardiologic researches stated that there is equitable verification to openly tie a bigger than prior rate of vitality with heart patients with Erectile Dysfunction issues with the consumption of sex medication. The number of life losses was almost equal in every respect to persons with heart attack who were cured with a placebo or any other medication that could have caused death to the heart sensitive.

The contrary effects of cardiovascular sickness, in opposition to death or any tragic outcome, are on account of a compound interaction with different risk factors that strengthen the sickness and its demonstration, together with a large number of emotional difficulties or bothers such as melancholy and zero self-security to ass to a small number of physiological factors that do count as well. Israeli along with Australian scientists have found that small amounts of the drug dissolved in a bottle of water is able to also enhance the lifespan of flower bouquets, allowing them to stand up straight for a week more than their ordinary natural life. This proves that the sex pill works its magic on the man and if we want to believe that with our heart then the result will be satisfactory too.

To wrap it all up on a fine note, we must admit that sex medication have helped lots and lots of people worldwide that live a healthy sex life every single day due to the effectiveness of the drugs like Cialis. We must take advantage of the medical progresses and make their innovation and inventions work on our benefit. Erectile Dysfunction is not the thing you must be ashamed of. Of course, it is not something you usually boast with but many people seem to have found a way of dealing with this issue and because of that we have witnessed some of the happiest families. Don’t be afraid of fixing your sex life if something is going wrong in it. Talk to your doctor and sort it all out. Your problems have never been this common and so easily fixed.

What do we know about the link between diabetes and erectile dysfunction

February 20th, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Let’s start this off with a simple definition. Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the human body cannot use the natural sugar in the blood as energy. The cause is the failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin. It comes in two different forms. In Type 1, the body fails to make any insulin. In Type 2, the body makes some insulin but fails to use it properly. It’s estimated that about 57 million people in the US are in the slide into diabetes, i.e. their blood sugar levels are already too high because their bodies are resisting the effect of insulin. This can only be described as an epidemic in the making. Why should we care? After all, both forms of diabetes are treatable. Well, the answer comes in two steps. Many people do not realize their danger in time. As a result, the diabetes begins to damage the body. Untreated, it can cause heart disease, kidney failure and blindness. In extreme cases, the feet and legs can develop gangrene and they have to be amputated. The second problem lies in the nature of Type 2 diabetes. This is largely a lifestyle issue. People eat and drink excessively, their weight rises and their body’s metabolism is thrown out of balance. Effective treatment requires change. An extreme measure is gastric bypass surgery to bring down the weight fast. Without this, it depends on people sticking with a diet and exercising regularly.

Erectile dysfunction is one of the first symptoms of Type 2 diabetes in men. The arteries leading into the penis are among the smallest in the body. To achieve an erection, the smooth muscle walls must be able to dilate. Unfortunately, as the blood sugar level rises, the walls of all blood vessels begin to harden. This slows down the dilation and the ability to achieve an erection gradually disappears. This disappearance is what drives men into seeking help. In turn, this prompts the diagnosis of the underlying problem.

Then, it’s all up to the man to change. Everything that can be done to prevent the spread of the disease must be done. This means following the treatment program laid down by your doctor and removing all the factors contributing to the erectile dysfunction. So you have to remove all the major causes of stress from your life. Try to be more laid back for all the right reasons. Quit smoking and stop excessive drinking. Some alcohol is OK but not a lot. And then lose some weight. Change your diet and, most importantly, start exercising. Raising your fitness and stamina levels improves the circulation of your blood and gives better erections. This is a high priority. As your blood sugar levels come under control, the damage to your body will slow. You can use viagra as needed to maintain the hardness of your erection but, as your weight drops, you should find erections improve naturally. Congratulations! You brought diabetes under control before all the major health disasters hit you and restored your erections. If you do not take effective action, buy viagra online. This will keep you going for a year or so but note the warnings given above. The point of the diagnosis is giving you the chance to prevent a disease from making you seriously ill in a few years time. The longer you delay effective action, the greater the risk of heart disease, blindness and amputations.

Should we change what we teach in school?

February 20th, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The questions we should consider are simple. Whose responsibility is it to teach our children about sex? Perhaps more importantly, when should this teaching take place? In the more innocent past, parents had more time to prepare for the moment when they would “reveal all”. This became a kind of standing joke because the children had usually worked out the basics before the parents summoned the courage to speak. Today, our children grow up so fast. They become adults without a chance to enjoy their childhood. Because of this acceleration, parents get left behind in the sexual education race. Through the rumors and myths of school and the experimentation among friends, children rapidly understand the biological difference between the sexes and how the process is supposed to work. Some educationalists suggest children should be slowly introduced to the nature of sex and how it fits into relationships from the age of five onwards.

That mention of age always brings a shock. When the parents themselves are often embarrassed by talk about sex and sexuality, the notion that such an innocent child might need to begin learning about adult matters is radical. Some parents are deeply offended by the idea. They remember their own innocence at that age and refuse to believe their own children can be different. Yet you only have to look at the world from a child’s point of view to see why education is necessary. Forty and fifty years ago, most people married and divorce was relatively uncommon. Now fewer people marry and same sex couples enter into civil partnerships. Divorce is routine with families splitting up and forming into new units. When children see relationships shifting and changing around them, they deserve to know what is happening which, of course, involves explaining about sex.

There is an increasing body of research which shows an improvement in relationship building among adults who have been through sex education at an early age. The more children are left to mythologise and guess wrongly about sex, the more unstable the relationships they form. This also fits in with new research suggesting that boys benefit from education with girls, whereas girls are better when taught in a single-sex environment. Curiously, the earlier boys learn how to relate to girls, the better they perform later in life. It is all a question of self-confidence. As boys grow into men, they have the chance to practise relationships with girls. With the right education and training, they can become better partners and more satisfying lovers.

Unfortunately, the majority of parents resist the idea of detailed sex education in school and, when it comes, they prefer abstinence as the core message. This is unrealistic. Children do not wait on their parent’s permission to begin their own experiments. For many older men, performance anxiety is becoming more common. They have lacked long-term training in relationships. Were it not for cialis, their self-confidence would have disappeared in the face of more assertive women. They have never completely come to terms with sex and the more modern sexual roles adopted by women. Men buy cialis to give them a natural erection whenever there is sexual stimulation. This gives them a chance to build longer term relationships once the sex is working properly.
